Have you noticed, in the community of people that you minister to, that some people don’t have a good relationship with God the Father? Probably someone in your family finds church unappealing because they don’t feel the Father’s life in their hearts.

There’s a connection between how we’ve been treated by our fathers (and other authority figures) and a misunderstanding of God’s Fatherhood.

Meet the Real Abba FatherMy book on The Father’s Heart has been changing lives because it’s a tool — like getting personal spiritual direction through the pages of the book. It’s one thing to hear about God’s love and quite another to let it take hold internally.

How do you help the people you serve when you recognize that their relationship with God the Father isn’t what it should be? It’s extremely essential to get down to the core: father wounds. It affects their relationship with Jesus the Son. It affects how they feel about attending Mass.

Recently I had some repair work done on my house. One of the handyman crew was a woman who is an inactive Catholic. I gave her a copy of my book and told her that it would bring her comfort and answer the unspoken questions in her heart. The next day she, when she returned to my house to work, she ran to me and said:

“I started to read the book you wanted me to read! It is phenomenal about helping a person get back to where they should be and who they want to be and why they should be that person and why God will place you where you need to be in your life and help you if you ask.”

The book had jump-started her return to the Church after just one day.

When we think of “evangelization,” we usually think about conversion to Christ. That’s good but not enough. Conversion begins with Christ and deepens with Father God. The healing of father wounds brings with it a lifetime change and greater parish involvement.

Ideally, everyone we evangelize or invite into more spiritual growth should have a spiritual director. Realistically, most people won’t do it. Unlike all other books on God’s Fatherhood, The Father’s Heart is a workbook that teaches, enlightens, and reinforces the healing journey as if I were meeting the reader one-on-one serving as their spiritual coach.
