Kiki: The idea that we sort of start out expecting our parents, our father and mother also, but our father especially, to sort of be God–. And then we carry that image forward of what a father is, and then we expect our God, the Father, to be like our father. So we expect to be disappointed again. So we wind up with false expectations.
Terry: A significant turning point for me was: We were trying to sell our house so that we could move our kids to a better neighborhood. An atheist who lived right down the street sold his house in two weeks, and we thought, “Okay, we can put our house on the market because we have God with us.”
Well, nine months later, we were still waiting to find a buyer. And I was losing my faith over it. I was thinking, “God, You’re letting us down. I counted on You. Why are You letting us down?”
I’d gotten to the point where even going to Mass, I was crying listening to the Scriptures because it was like, “Oh, Jesus seems so loving. God the Father seems so loving, but not for me.” I was feeling very left out, very hurt and abandoned.
I asked a nun who worked for the parish to help me with this crisis of faith. And there was one key thing she said that changed my life forever: “We project onto God what humans have been like.”
That made me realize that we project onto God the way humans have treated us….
The house took another month to sell, but during that time I had no anxiety, no depression. I was just like, “Okay, God’s got this.” And I was at peace with it.
